TripPA Tips: Packing your Teacher Bag

14 January 2025
Happy New Year! As we move closer towards the release of the TripPA school trip management app, we’ll be sharing some key tips for running great educational visits for all ages, which we hope will be useful for EVCs and teachers alike. While the TripPA app will help to streamline all that pre-trip admin and paperwork, doing your own packing for a school trip will still often be the last thing you think about. However, it’s important to look after yourself and your own needs if you want to run a great school trip. So, to ensure you don’t end up without a key item on your next visit, read our teacher bag packing list to help you pack!

Now, you’ve probably already made a packing list for your trip participants, so use that as a starting point and go through it item by item. If the children need something, you probably need it too! You don’t want to be the only one without waterproof shoes during a rain storm in the jungle…

Teacher Essentials

  • Comfortable bag – you’ll be on your feet a lot, and in and out of your bag frequently, so ditch the style for practicality! Opt for a backpack with padded straps and multiple compartments.
  • Once you are using the TripPA app, you won’t need any paper documentation at all – it’ll all be right there on your device at the click of a button. But while you await the release of our school trip app, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got all that key documentation in your trip pack: pupil lists, emergency contact info, medical details, risk assessments and your itinerary.
  • School medical kit – this isn’t necessarily for you, but it’s so important that you don’t forget it!!
  • Your own meds – don’t forget painkillers and travel sickness tablets – we know they can be lifesavers on those long journeys.
  • Shoes – you’ll probably be wearing rather than packing these, but make sure you choose comfortable shoes for all that walking!
  • Phone plus chargers (normal charger plus a portable one)
  • Wallet with cards and cash.
  • Drinks – bringing a water bottle is important, but as teachers, we know only too well that you will probably want a thermos of coffee or tea too!
  • Snacks – you never know what might happen, so be prepared with lots of snacks for yourself.
  • Wet weather gear – we know there’s nothing worse than being cold and wet when you are responsible for a big group of children out and about! Bring at least an umbrella, even if there’s no rain in the forecast.
  • Distraction/Entertainment for the children – you never know where you might get stuck, so it’s always good to have something up your sleeve for difficult moments. Depending on the age, this could be a trivia game, a ball game, or just some sweets…

Going on a multi-day trip, or heading overseas?

  • Personal entertainment – you’ll need a bit of downtime to ensure you are operating at your best, so make sure to bring some headphones or a book/tablet to give you a bit of a break when you can have it.
  • Power convertor – if you’re going abroad, make sure to bring a few of these.
  • Passport and EHIC/GHIC card – it’s unlikely you’d forget these but worth double checking!
